4 Ways to Determine Your Style

Do you wonder what your style is?

Do you question whether you have one definitive sense of style?

Do you open your wardrobe and see a variety of different styles from vintage to modern, minimalist and boho for example and not really know what to wear?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might still be on the path to defining your unique style.

So how do you do it? How do you narrow down what your style is?

Obviously you’re different to the person next door with your own personality, likes, dislikes and body shape but you take all that and apply it.

1. Take inspiration from others

This doesn’t mean becoming a carbon copy of someone else. It means figuring out which celebrity or style icon you’re drawn to, figuring out what you like on someone you see on Instagram or in a magazine and then giving that a go.

Find some similar pieces you’ve seen them wear and add them to your wardrobe. Then see how they make you feel.

2. Ask yourself why you’re drawn to certain things

It might be stripes or denim, floral or black but if you’re constantly taking these things off the rack or adding to cart then there must be a reason for it. Do you like how you look in it? Does it make you feel good? If the answer is yes, then you’re onto something.

3. Don’t fall victim to trends

Trends come in and out with seasons, constantly changing so you’re not going to figure out your style if you follow what’s in fashion.

4. Take risks

You’ll never know if you never try. It might just mean trying something on in a change room you’d never consider wearing and seeing how it makes you feel. You can even take a photo of yourself, leave the outfit behind and if you’re still thinking about it hours or days later, go back and get it.

Figuring out your sense of style won’t take a week. It’s a long term project.

It’s taken me a very long time to determine my sense of style and it’s definitely changed over the years.

I’ve got a good idea of what it is now thanks to trial and error and also seeing what I like on other people and applying that to me. Not all the styles I like suit me so I don’t wear them.

My wardrobe is mostly monochrome and classic. I invest in essentials like white and black shirts, jeans, blazers, cardigans and t-shirts and then rotate them. I add in trend pieces along the way to keep my wardrobe current but don’t spend much on them.

I’ve worn plenty of colour and even florals but it’s just never made me feel like me.

If you’re still figuring out your sense of style, keep at it. It’ll come.
