4 Tips To Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone
You know the saying - take a risk and get the rewards - well the same idea applies to your style.
I’m all about finding your style, what you like, what you feel comfortable and confident in and then sticking with that winning formula.
But, there’s a place for mixing it up and stepping out your comfort zone.
I’m only just starting to do this. I’ve figured out my style. I like what I like and know what’ll make me feel confident. It’s now time to experiment.
I bought this lace top that’s over the top and a real statement piece. When I put it on I wasn’t sure. I mean I love the top with it’s exceptional detail but it’s different to what I usually wear. I considered returning it but didn’t. Sure I won’t wear it a lot but when I do I feel extra and glamorous and that’s a great feeling.
Then there’s this check top that I saw and knew I wanted. It’s a boyfriend shirt so way more oversized than I’m used to and a pattern which I also don’t normally go for. Again I thought about returning it but decided not to. I love that it can be worn tucked in, you can do a half tuck or wear it as a shacket.
Then I went for a cropped jumper which was an online buy. When I tried it on it was WAY more cropped than I was ever expecting. I decided to be brave and kept it. I wear it with super high waisted jeans and pants.
And finally I picked this dressier pattern shirt. I stood in front of the mirror for a long time. I was so indecisive about it. In the end steered away from what’s safe for me and kept this one too.
I do want to keep stepping out of my comfort zone. Being brave and challenging yourself (even if it’s just with your clothing) is empowering.
So, if you’re thinking about it but haven’t quite gotten over the line, here are my 4 tips to finding pieces that are a little different to what you usually wear while still making you feel fabulous.
1. Stick to the colours you like
It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone rather than take a massive leap without a parachute. Go small and slow with a top here and there or a shirt in colours or tones you know you already like so it’s not an extreme shock to the system. This crop knit is a perfect example of that - the crop style is new for me but in black and white, it makes me feel comfortable so it’s kind of a happy medium.
2. Mix and match it
Try it on with a range of different things you have in your wardrobe, For example, if it’s a shirt, try it on with a skirt, jeans and pants. If it’s a pair of pants, try it on with a whole range of different tops to see how it works and what you like best. I did this with the spotted top.
3. Don’t be afraid to try
Look at what’s on trend and get some inspiration from other people whether someone you saw at the supermarket or the park, in a magazine or even social media. You might return things if you buy it online because it doesn’t work for you. That’s totally ok. It’s a trial and error exercise. If you’re shopping in store, try it on and think about what other pieces you could pair it with in your wardrobe.
4. Don’t spend too much
It’s experimentation and might be something you’re vibing right now but not be something you’ll keep forever compared to something like jeans or a black blazer that you know you’ll wear for years.
