How To Care For Your Denim

My jeans could quite be the most worn pieces in my wardrobe.

I'm not just talking about the pants versions of jeans but also skirts, shorts and dresses as well as jackets. They never go out of style and are just on rotation all the time, even more so since I became a mum.

They also go with everything. You can dress up a pair of jeans with a shirt or blazer, heels or boots. They can also be dressed down with a tee and sneakers or flats. A pair of denim shorts is a summer essential and for a slightly elevated look, a skirt is also a staple.

A denim jacket is something so easy to throw on top of any outfit whether over a dress or pants and a knit for an extra layer or warmth. It gives you that effortlessly put together look.

Jeans are made of denim which is actually a heavy duty cotton fabric. It's made using a twill weave which gives it the diagonal type pattern.

Basically they're built to be tough and wear well but it helps if we wash them properly so we can keep them in good condition for as long as possible.

So, here are some tips to wash your denim to give your jeans their longest shelf life.

1. They can be machine washed but avoid unnecessary washes. Try spot cleaning. If you see a little mark, go to it gently with a baby wipe. Maybe add a little washing liquid directly to the spot and giving it a rinse in the laundry tub.

2. Wash your jeans inside out and in cold water. Turning them inside out means the outside of your jeans is being protected from agitation in the wash and from the colour fading, all the while still getting a thorough wash. Using cold water prevents them shrinking and the colour running. Your wash should be 30 degrees or less and you only need a short wash

3. Use a washing liquid instead of washing powder. Powder will leave white marks. Only use a little bit of liquid though and don't use fabric softener as it coats the denim and can wear down the fabric so they don't last as long.

4. Dry your jeans flat and do not put them in the tumble dryer. The heat will damage your jeans. Take them out of the washing machine, give them a little stretch to flatten them out and then dry them out of the sun.
