Your Style Questions Answered
What styles suit my bigger hips?
The A-line style is the most flattering style for skirts and dresses. It falls around the hips rather than clinging or hugging giving a universally flattering shape. It’s called A-line because it kind of looks like an A. More fitted up top and then goes out as you go down. When it comes to pants, it can be a little trickier to find the right pair. I recommend playing around and trying on different styles, starting with straight leg jeans or pants and also a wider leg. They're not as tight as skinny jeans or pants so might not only be more flattering but they can also be more comfortable.
How do I know which colours suit me?
I don’t really subscribe to the science of colours stuff. You can have a look at the colour of your veins and the undertone of your skin and figure out what colours you ‘should’ be wearing, or you can just put something on and see how you feel in it. If you like it, then wear it. If you don’t like it, then don’t.
Broadly speaking, when you put on something colourful, it should bring a bit of colour to your cheeks and make your skin look a little more vibrant. If it makes your skin look dull and doesn’t really do anything for you, then i’d try something else. If you like pale pink but when up against your face it doesn’t look great, then try a pale pink skirt or pair of pants instead.
Where are the best places to find jeans?
Decjuba has a really wide range or jeans - skinny jeans, straight leg, girlfriend jeans and also jeans with an elastic waist instead of buttons (which can be a great alternative to maternity jeans). They’re good quality too. I also like Zara jeans for the range of styles they have as well as the good quality. They’re also both affordable which helps.
Can I pull this outfit off? Am I too old to wear …
I get these questions a lot. Wear what you want. For me it’s all about how something makes you feel. If you put on an outfit that makes you feel amazing then walk out the door in it. If you feel self conscious, then take it off. Someone judging your outfit or commenting about what you’re wearing is more a reflection on them than on you.
I want to have a capsule wardrobe but don’t know where to start.
Write yourself a list of the essential items that’ll form a capsule wardrobe. Here’s what I think you need:
- black pants
- black/neutral skirt
- black blazer
- black dress
- white shirt
- white t-shirt
- jeans
- denim jacket
- sneakers (casual ones not runners)
- black pumps or boots
The idea behind a capsule wardrobe is you have these basic pieces that mix and match with everything else in your wardrobe. They’re pieces you spend more money on because they’ll be worn on repeat, so should be better quality to last longer. Then you keep adding to your wardrobe, allowing you to create multiple outfits. Building a wardrobe takes a long time. The ultimate goal is to open your wardrobe, love what you see and for it to be easy to pick an outfit that makes you feel fantastic.
