Your Style Questions Answered #2
As a personal stylist, I get a fair few style questions thrown at me during shopping sessions and wardrobe makeovers so I have compiled some of the most frequently asked ones lately.
Are skinny jeans out of fashion?
Skinny jeans never really go out of fashion. They are a classic style but at the moment they've been pushed to the side by wide leg jeans. We've been seeing the more relaxed fits dominating the last few seasons and they are sticking around. I am also seeing a return of more straight lef styles so perhaps this is signalling a return to the skinny jean?
When it comes to classics like skinny jeans though, if you like them, then wear them, regardless of whether it's currently on trend or not.
What's on trend for Spring?
I have started seeing some Spring styles trickling into stores and online.
Sets will still be big but think sleeveless vests (longer and cropped) with shorts, pants or a mini skirt. The oversized look is still prominent, with bombers, blazers and denim shackets. The cropped style bomber is also sticking around from Winter and I've seen some really nice mini skirt, bomber jacket sets too while the weather is still cool.
You'll see more strapless and off shoulder tops and dresses, pink, purple and blue, obviously some prints because Spring is not complete without them, but I've also seen some black and white prints so not all colourful, big and bold.
There'll be a lot of denim, leather and the usual cotton and some linen. I'll come back to you in more detail about this soon when more styles make their way into stores.
Can I wear wide leg pants with a blazer or something looser fitting on top?
Absolutely! We are definitely in our relaxed style of dressing era so wider leg pants with a more oversized jacket or blazer that falls below the hips can be worn together. I would tuck in a shirt or top underneath to balance out the proportions a little and avoid having a shapeless outfit.
However, we are also having a no tuck moment, so leave that shirt out and untuck that jumper if you want to.
How do I layer to stay warm?
You can go from thinnest to thickest layer. Start with a top or light knit, add a blazer or cardigan and then throw a coat on top. This also makes it easy to remove layers depending on the heating situation of where you go.
I also like to throw on a chunky knit and coat or trench. Make sure though, if this is a look you want to create, that there's extra room in the sleeve of your coat so it's not too tight around the arms with a thick jumper underneath.
