8 Tips to Detox Your Wardrobe

It’s tough to throw things out.

You might look at your wardrobe and think the task is so overwhelming, so you don’t even start. You might have a sentimental attachment to some items of clothing or don’t want to get rid of something you spent a fair bit on even though you haven’t worn it in a while.

You have to be in the right frame of mind to begin the clear out – rational rather that ruthless – and and make sure you have some time when you won’t be disturbed. Don’t worry, it won’t take hours.

Here are 8 things to do to detox your wardrobe

1.     Make sure you can see everything in your wardrobe. If there are things in drawers, consider taking them out so you have an idea of exactly what you have.

2.     Make a yes, maybe and no pile. The yes pieces goes back in the wardrobe, the maybe will be the things you can try on to make the final decision and the no pile can go to charity or in the bin, depending on the quality.

3.     If you haven’t worn it in a year, ask yourself if you’ll ever wear it again. If not, get rid of it. A good tip is, after you’ve worn something, turn the hanger around when you put it back in your wardrobe. Then you’ll know exactly what does and doesn’t get worn.

4.     If you’re keeping something hoping to lose or gain weight to fit into it, get rid of it. Looking at it everyday won’t make you feel good.

5.     If something is damaged, ask yourself if you’ll bother to get it fixed. If not, put it in the no pile.

6.     Also ask yourself if you feel good wearing what you have, if you like it and if it reflects your style. If the answer is no to any of these, throw it out.

7.     Once you’ve gotten rid of a few things, reorganise your wardrobe. Buy some new hangers and make sure they’re all the same so it makes your wardrobe look neat. Consider slim line hangers like satin or plastic so you can fit more of them in. I don’t recommend wire hangers as they’re less likely to keep your clothes in top condition.

8.     Order your clothes. You can either go by colour or put all your pants together, then dresses, skirts, and shorts, shirts, jumpers, tops etc. Hang up as much as possible so you can see what you own. Delicate knits shouldn’t be hung up.
