How To Elevate Your Style Without Spending Too Much Money

This is not a new year, new you thing!

It’s also February so can’t be a new years resolution blog post. If you’re like me, January is just mayhem with holidays and school holidays, returning to work and school and it’s just a chaotic blur.

But now (maybe) normalcy is returning so perhaps it’s time to think about you and upping the style stakes.

As a stylist, I am constantly thinking about what I wear and how it makes me feel. I am very comfortable with my style, what I choose to have in my wardrobe and the outfits I wear everyday, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to give it a little refresh every now and then, adding a few new things.

As you probably know, I have a capsule wardrobe, so it’s filled with a lot of basics like black pants, a black blazer, a white shirt, denim jacket etc. I then mix and match these basics with other pieces in my wardrobe. I think it’s the easiest and least stressful way to pick an outfit everyday. Invest in the basics that you can keep for years is one of my top style tips.

While we all don’t have Kardashian sized budgets to spend money on updating our style, there are simple ways to do it, that won’t break the bank.

1.       Style Inspo

I’m not suggesting stealing someone else’s style or copying an outfit you don’t feel comfortable in. I am suggesting having a scroll on Instagram or Pinterest, perhaps grabbing a good old fashion magazine and just seeing if you’re drawn to anything. It can be adding a belt to your pants, skirt or blazer, finding new things to wear with your jeans or considering a colour combination you never would have before. This doesn’t require you to spend any money. You’re using what you already have in your wardrobe and giving your clothes new life.

2.       Trends

While I don’t condone fast fashion, it does have its place for trend pieces. These are the pieces I suggest spending very little money on as you’re unlikely to wear them for years to come. If you see a trend you love, jump on it. It’s the best way to freshen up your wardrobe and perhaps allow yourself to branch out, step out of your comfort zone and try something a little different without the guilt, because it didn’t cost a lot.

3.       Accessories

I’m talking shoes, bags and jewellery here. While most of my wardrobe is black, white and neutral, plus a bit of denim and olive green, I add colour with my shoes. I own a red pair and orange pair of heels. I also got myself a denim boot and have some silver boots tucked away too.

My favourite bag is a black studded shoulder bag and it makes a statement. I also own earrings of all shapes and sizes. Some of my earrings aren’t expensive (mostly the really big statement ones) but they’re fun and can be the perfect finishing touch to an outfit.

I am always looking and window shopping for something that could spark a little extra joy and give me the outfit buzz I love.

If you’re looking to level up your style but don’t know where to start, perhaps you hate shopping or don’t know what your style even is. I can help. I offer personal shopping sessions (in 2 hours you could have a whole new wardrobe) and wardrobe makeovers (getting rid of what you don’t wear or love and finding new ways to wear old pieces).

There’s more info here on those style sessions and you have any questions, please get in touch here.
