The 4 Shoe Styles Every Woman Needs

By now you probably know I talk a lot about essential wardrobe items and creating what’s called a capsule wardrobe - the basic items like jeans, black pants, a white shirt and blazer - that you wear on repeat season after season.

They’re investment pieces and form the basis of your wardrobe.

What also forms the basis of your wardrobe are shoes. They can’t be forgotten as they can be what ties your outfit together or the focus of it.

Christian Dior once said “you can never take too much care over the choice of your shoes. Too many women think that they are unimportant, but the real proof of an elegant woman is what is on her feet."

So here are the four shoe styles I think every woman should own.

Sneakers

These are not your trainers but more of a lifestyle shoe.

They can be worn all year round and with everything you own from jeans to skirts, shorts, jumpsuits, black pants and dresses.

What colour you choose is up to you and really there’s no reason you can’t have more than one pair.

A white pair is my go to - they go with everything. I also have a black pair.

Boots

I am a sucker for a pair of chunky but feminine ankle boots. I prefer mine to have laces for that edgy look and don’t mind a buckle on the side too.

If you like something more delicate, a pair with a stiletto heel is for you.

You can wear an ankle boot with skirts, shorts and dresses (add stockings in Winter), jeans, pants and leggings.

The other boot options are ones that come mid calf, to the knee or above the knee. It can have a heel or be flat depending on your preference. Perhaps you choose one of each.

They can all be dressed down with jeans, a tee and jacket and that way we get more wear out of them, to get a return on our shoe investments.

Most of my boots are black but adding in a neutral shade will be another versatile option.

Heels

There are two in this category - strappy and closed toe.

The strappy one will be more of a Summer and Spring shoe and I love them for how feminine they are. A heel definitely elongates the leg as well making it perfect to wear with a dress or skirt.

These are actually my wedding shoes that I have worn a few times since the big day.

A closed toe pair comes in handy in Winter and depending on the size of the heel, makes an ideal pair of work shoes too.

You definitely need a black pair of each and can then add a nude pair.

Flats

While you can usually find a comfortable pair of heels you believe you can run a marathon in, sometimes a flat is perfect when you’re heading to meet a friend for coffee or to run some errands.

It can be a ballet style, espadrilles (my favourite form of flat), pointed toe or round toe depending on your preference and also what best suits and fits your foot.
