What’s on Trend for Summer

Summer is coming and so are new trends. I use the term new loosely because they're often an update on something old and this Summer we're seeing some references to the 1990's.

Now I always say, proceed with caution with trends. They're unlikely to last longer than a season or two so don't go splashing your money on what you won't wear all that often.

Instead, save it for wardrobe essentials, the pieces that form your capsule wardrobe such as jeans and a black skirt. The ones that can mix and match. If you want more info on this click here.

Now onto the trends.

Colour

We've seen colour around since the start of Spring and the pinks and greens aren't going anywhere. It's all about vibrant colours whether a top, dress, skirt or pants. You will also see the usual black, white and neutrals around if (like me) colour isn't your thing.

Cargo pants

This is one of those updated trends because cargo pants were everywhere in the '90s. They're oversized and have the big pockets, could be low waisted (shudder) but are cool and edgy. Wear them with sneakers and a tee or add heels and a shirt for a night out.

Waistcoats

Trends don't usually excite me but this one has. As you can see in the main pic for this blog post, I bought one. You can wear it with jeans, a skirt, wide leg pants or shorts. There are options and while I love wearing it buttoned up on it's own, you can also wear it unbuttoned over a t-shirt, white shirt or singlet, under a blazer or over a dress. The reason I jumped on board this trend is because there are many ways to wear something so you'll get a lot of use out of it.

Big sleeves

Think puffy 3/4 sleeves or ones that just cover the shoulder. There'll also be cute little frills over the shoulder for some fun detail.

Maxi skirts

This is another trend I'm really keen on. Maxi skirts are so comfy and can be worn casually with sneakers or sandals or dressed up for a night out. Choose wisely and you'll keep it for a few seasons.

Cropped jackets

These are jackets that stop at the waist and maybe show a bit of midriff. Not one I'll be getting on board with as I think blazers that fall below the hips are super flattering and are wardrobe mainstays. These are a better investment.

Sequins

I love a bit of sparkle and Summer is the perfect time to bring out the bling. It's a little bit extra.

Cut outs

This trend has been around for a while and isn't going anywhere. There are so many dresses with cut outs and a few tops as well.

Crochet

Not like your grandma used to knit but smaller stitches and in thinner material. It's a fun way to add texture to your outfit.

Midriffs on show

As with the cropped jackets, a lot of tops and even some waistcoats reveal the belly. There are enough alternative options thankfully, if you're not comfy with showing too much skin.
